Mercer Torgau, ehemals HIT Holz, gehört seit 2022 zum nordamerikanischen Konzern Mercer International. Das 1999 gegründete Unternehmen ist mit mehr als 200 Millionen Euro Umsatz und rund 800 Mitarbeitern der größte europäische Hersteller von Europaletten und der größte Arbeitgeber der Region. An dem Produktionsstandort in Torgau werden jährlich mehr als 1 Millionen Festmeter Holz zu Paletten und weiteren Holzprodukten (u.a. Schnittholz, Pellets und Briketts) verarbeitet. Das Werk verfügt über jährliche Produktions- und Trocknungskapazitäten von 17 Millionen Transportpaletten. Alle Stufen der Wertschöpfung ab Anlieferung des Rundholzes über die Produktion und Auslieferung der Paletten und sonstiger Holzprodukte finden dabei vor Ort in Torgau statt. Die im Verarbeitungsprozess anfallenden Sägerestprodukte Hackschnitzel und Sägespäne werden zu vermarktungsfähigen Pellets, Briketts und Pressspanklötze für Transportpaletten weiterverarbeitet. Mit der Rinde der Baumstämme werden in fünf eigenen Biomasseheizkraftwerken die gesamte am Standort benötigten Wärme und Strom erzeugt. Einzigartig in der Verpackungsindustrie ist das integrierte Produktionskonzept, mit dem 100% des Rohstoffes Holz verwendet wird. Alle Stufen der Wertschöpfung – angefangen von der Beschaffung des Rohholzes über die Produktion und Auslieferung der Paletten und sonstiger Holzprodukte – finden dabei vor Ort in Torgau statt. Die im Verarbeitungsprozess anfallenden Reststoffe wie Holzrinde, Hackschnitzel oder Sägespäne werden von uns zu vermarktungsfähigen End- oder Zwischenprodukten weiterverarbeitet. So werden beispielsweise aus Sägespänen Pellets und Briketts oder Klötze für Transportpaletten hergestellt. Mit den Holzreststoffen werden auch fünf eigene Biomasseheizkraftwerke betrieben.
